i was actually planning to make something quite similar to this, but the thought of making all those hemispheres was quite daunting. daleks are devilishly complicated beasts.

What ho, AB!

I must admit that I cheated on the hemispheres - shadows, reflections, etc. are a nightmare - so there was a lot of copy/paste/transform/tear out hair. Everything else I placed in it's own layer. I am considering animating it - any advice would be geatly appreciated.
